When is it Time to Replace Your Windows?

For many items around the home, it’s easy to tell when they need to be replaced, for example, your dishwasher breaks or your faucet is leaking. The signs that your windows may need to be replaced, however, are much more subtle. How do you know when it’s time for a window update? Consider replacing your windows if they are:

Hard to Operate
Don’t resign yourself to dealing with malfunctioning windows. Windows that are hard to open, don’t lock correctly, or get stuck when opening or closing should be replaced. New windows will open and close smoothly, allowing you to reliably ventilate your house.

Drafty
Aging or poorly installed windows are more likely to let in air from the outside, which can make your home colder or warmer depending on the season. Place your hand along the edges of your window and feel for incoming air. If you notice a draft, the seal is likely damaged, and the window should be replaced.

Damaged
A visual inspection of your windows is sometimes all it takes to realize they should be replaced. Windows with cracked or shattered glass should be repaired or replaced immediately. Frames that are decaying or bowing are also signs that new windows are needed.

Prone to Condensation
When excessive condensation forms between windowpanes it is a sign that the seal of the window is failing. This lets in moisture which then forms condensation in the windows. Note that this only refers to condensation within the panes; condensation on the outside of the window is normal.

Inefficient at Blocking Noise
We may not think of it as their key role, but windows act a sound barrier for your house. If you are hearing outdoor noise—like barking dogs or a busy road—at higher levels than usual, it may be time to upgrade your windows. Thicker windowpanes and insulated window frames can go a long way in reducing noise.

Causing Higher Energy Bills
When utility bills seem to creep higher and higher with no obvious reason, turn to your windows. Aging windows are not as effective at regulating the temperature inside of your house, causing your heating and air conditioning units to work harder to maintain your chosen temperature. This leads to increases in energy consumption and higher bills.
