5 Fixes for Common Window Problems

It’s annoying – and, yet, it is something we often overlook.  It’s that window that won’t open or the screen that’s missing or torn.  Take the time! It’s going to be beautiful out and you want to open your windows wide – and you want to be able to watch the first snowfall of the year toasty warm with a clear view out your window.

Here are 5 common window problems and how to fix them. If your window:

1. Won’t open or close.

For hung windows that open up and down, inspect the sash support systems on the sides of the window. Note that it may be concealed by a cover. See if it needs replacing. Windows that crank open may just be a matter of replacing the window operator. If your windows slide in tracks, check for debris. Remove it and lubricate the track with WD-40, 3-in-1 oil or the oil your manufacturer recommended.

2. Are drafty.

Chances are the weather stripping has cracked or broken and is letting in that hot or cold outside air. If it’s broken off, it may even be part of the reason for a window jam. Look at the weather stripping on the window and decide whether to repair or replace. Weather stripping comes in many different forms so be sure to replace with a product that will be right on your windows. Not sure? Ask at your local hardware store or call a window replacement company for help.

3. Don’t lock.

This is really not something you should ignore. Replacing the hardware so your windows can be locked is an easy DIY job. Buy new hardware at a store or shop online. Just be sure to buy the same size as the old locks.

4. Broken or foggy.

It’s time to replace! Foggy means there is condensation between the panes in double or triple pane windows – broken is broken. You can remove the frames and take them to a local glass or window shop for replacement or call your window contractor and have a new window installed. A new window is the best choice if the windows are old and the weather stripping or frame also needs replacement.

5. Doesn’t have screens.

Many of us are used to keeping our windows closed and our A/C or furnaces running. There are beautiful days – let the fresh air in. If your missing screen is keeping you from opening a window, new screen mesh can be put in the frame. If you no longer have the frame or its damaged, call a local window repair shop and see if they can help you out.

Keep your windows in good shape and enjoy both the view and the fresh air. If you have more than one of the problems above, it may be time to think about window replacement. Remember, if your budget says take it easy, you can replace your windows one at a time based on need instead of doing them all at once.
